The Far-Infrared Sauna Experience

Saunas are quite safe for most people if one follows simple precautions.
- Avoid drinking alcohol before sauna use.
- Avoid heavy meals two hours before a sauna session
- Drink four ounces of water before entering a sauna and eight ounces afterwards
- Remove metal jewelry before entering a sauna, as it may become hot. Glasses can be worn, however, the parts of the frame that do not touch the skin can become hot. Rings do not generally become uncomfortable.
- Pregnant women and children under five should avoid sauna use, although in Finland pregnant women regularly use hot air saunas during pregnancy with no apparent ill effects.

A far-infrared sauna should be preheated for 15-30 minutes prior to entering. After the preheat cycle, the sauna will generally be about 100-110f and will rise to about 130-150f during a 30 minute session. If the temperature becomes uncomfortable, the vent in the ceiling may be opened and/or the door may be opened slightly. The infrared rays continue even with the door open and one continues to receive the benefits of the infrared, although the sweating may decrease.

To enhance the effects of a sauna session, visualize absorbing the heat and energy. Deep, slow breathing and good posture are very helpful. Sound therapy, such as listening to low tones, is also excellent. Aromatherapy is also very effective during a sauna session. Do not place oils on the skin, as they might cause a burn.

Finishing Up: How long one remains inside a sauna depends on one’s condition. Body temperature should not increase more than four degrees. The pulse should not increase more than 50% of the resting pulse. Begin with 15 minutes if one is ill. If the heart begins to race, sweating stops or one feels very faint, end the session immediately. Thirty minutes is recommended and sixty minutes is a maximum time.

When finished, towel off the sweat. Drink eight ounces of water. It is recommended to sit or relax for 15 minutes.
